| Basic Elements of Search Engine Marketing |
SEM operates in somewhat of a vacuum since the Search Engines of course do not disclose their ranking algorithms. Nevertheless, the elements which go into a top ranking site can be easily deduced from a review of top ranking sites across a range of keywords.
Here are a few of the common elements that make up a top ranking site:
|
- Content. You may have heard the expression Content is King. This means that of all the other factors, the content on your website is the most important. While this may be over-stating the case, adding regular content to your site is very important.
- Linking. Links from other sites to your site are very important. In the past it was simply the number of links. Today it is the quality of links that are pointing to your site. Here are a few things to look for: what kind of sites are linking to your link partners? How are sites linking to you? What is the text used to link to you? How old are your link partner sites, and how long have they linked to you.
- Niche. The Internet is all about specialization and the sites that focus tightly on a small niche are the sites that tend to rank higher. Focus on your niche and done stray into other areas.
- Authority. Getting links from sites in your niche that are ‘authority’ sites is critical you a top ranking. Find the most popular, best ranking, biggest, oldest sites in your area and beg them for links. Review the top sites in your niche and copy their site structur.
- Age. The search engines prefer older sites and the older the better. Google especially reasons that that if a site has been around for a long time, they must be ‘better.’
- On Page or Off Page?
|
| Techniques for ranking sites fall into two general categories – On-page and Off-page. On page techniques are things like adding keywords to your page, and Off page are things like links to your site on other sites. Both are very important and both count. When examining other sites that rank at the top of the Search Engine Results, try to see if sites rank for On-page factors, or Off-page factors. If most of the sites are very strong with Off-page factors such as linking, then you may be able to rank well by emphasizing On-page factors. |
